Joseph is Tutor and Lecturer in Church History at St Mellitus College. He has a Masters Degree in Greek and Roman History from the University of Oxford and is currently completing doctoral research on conservative evangelicals in the twentieth century. He teaches across the whole course of church history, and also offers modules on ecclesiology and global theologies.

Joseph is also the Diversity and Inclusion Officer for St Mellitus College. Joseph is committed to equality of opportunity and ensuring that college is a community in which Christians of every background can thrive and build one another up in their vocations.

In addition to his work with SMC, Joseph plays an active part in the strategy and governance of the national Church of England as the youngest ever member of the Archbishops’ Council and its legislative reform committee.

Joseph’s research focuses on the summer camps run at Iwerne Minster by evangelicals in the interwar and postwar years. He is considering the role of Iwerne in the survival and shape of conservative evangelical religion during the decades of wider secularisation following the Second World War.

Alongside his doctoral research, Joseph has been a member of the Church of England’s national Governance Review Group, Chaired by the Bishop of Leeds. Drawing together expertise from government, business, the church and charity sector, the group’s remit has been to review the effectiveness of the governance structures, processes and activities of the national Church of England, and to recommend changes to improve the effectiveness of those structures and relationships. He also publishes regular reviews and articles.
